Worth preparing alongside

We cannot line BARC OCES/DGFS up against other exams yet

This does not mean BARC OCES/DGFS shares nothing with the exams you are preparing for — only that we have not loaded a chapter-by-chapter syllabus we can compare against, so we will not guess. We compare 0 exams whose official syllabus we have traced to the conducting body, and this one is not among them yet.

How to apply
Open official application page
  1. 1Read the Information Brochure for the relevant programme before applying. Applicants who do not meet the eligibility criteria in Section-4 need not apply.
  2. 2Register and fill the online application on the OCES/DGFS portal at https://www.barcocesexam.in while it is open. For OCES/DGFS-2026 the portal carried a notice saying the application portal for the OCES/DGFS-2026 recruitment programme and the DDFS-2026 doctoral academic programme would be live at 20:00 hrs on 2nd January 2026.
  3. 3Choose one or both screening channels - the BARC online examination (CBT) and/or the GATE score channel. The brochure advises choosing both to maximise the chance of being shortlisted.
  4. 4If opting for the CBT, give exam city preferences. A candidate applying for both OCES/DGFS-2026 and DDFS-2026 must select the same set of city preferences in both applications, because the CBT is common to the two programmes.
  5. 5If opting for the GATE channel with a GATE-2026 score, upload the GATE-2026 score in the window BARC opens after the GATE results are declared (27 March - 2 April 2026 for this cycle).
  6. 6Pay the non-refundable application fee of Rs. 500 online where applicable; exempt candidates skip this step and instead bring valid category proof to the exam centre.
  7. 7Use the correction window if any detail needs changing (7-14 February 2026 for this cycle).
  8. 8Download the admit card when released and appear for the CBT at the allotted centre with a printed admit card and an original photo ID.
  9. 9Shortlisted candidates choose an interview slot on the portal, subject to availability, and attend the selection interview in Mumbai.
FAQs
Do I have to sit the BARC exam, or can I use my GATE score?

Either. Screening for the selection interview runs on two alternative channels: the BARC online examination (CBT), or a valid GATE-2024, GATE-2025 or GATE-2026 score in the GATE paper that matches your qualifying degree discipline. You may opt for one or both, and the brochure advises opting for both because the GATE cut-off is finalised only after the BARC exam is over. Where the GATE channel is used, the highest of your valid GATE scores is considered.

What is the BARC online exam pattern?

100 objective multiple-choice questions with one correct answer each, designed to be answerable in 120 minutes. Each correct answer fetches 3 marks and each wrong answer costs 1 mark; unattempted questions score nothing. The paper is in English only, an on-screen calculator is provided, and physical calculators and log tables are barred.

What is the syllabus?

There is no common syllabus. The paper is specific to the discipline you select - at B.E./B.Tech./B.Sc.(Engineering) level for the eight engineering disciplines and at M.Sc. level for the five science disciplines. General English, General Knowledge and Aptitude are not assessed.

What do I get paid?

OCES Trainee Scientific Officers are paid a stipend of Rs. 74,000 per month during the one-year training plus a one-time book allowance of Rs. 30,000. DGFS fellows are paid Rs. 74,000 per month for two years with M.Tech. tuition fee reimbursed, a contingency grant of Rs. 60,000 per annum for 2 years and additional BRNS funding up to Rs. 4,00,000. On absorption you join as Scientific Officer 'C' in Level 10 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix starting at Rs. 56,100, with approximately Rs. 1,34,000 monthly emoluments (with three increments) at the Mumbai rate including DA, HRA and Transport Allowance.

Is the OCES/DGFS-2026 cycle still open?

No. Registration closed on 31 January 2026, the online examination was held on 14 and 15 March 2026, selection interviews ran from 12 May to 12 June 2026, and the OCES-2026 course commenced on 31 July 2026. As of 3 August 2026 BARC had not published a notification for the 2027 cycle on barcocesexam.in.

How old can I be?

As on 1 August 2026 the maximum age was 26 years for General, 29 for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) and 31 for SC/ST, dependents of those who died in the 1984 riots, and persons domiciled in the Kashmir Division of J&K between 01/01/1980 and 31/12/1989. Physically challenged persons of all categories get a 10-year relaxation. The minimum age is 18.
