- 1Register for GATE in the year named in the BPCL advertisement, in the GATE paper corresponding to your qualifying engineering discipline.
- 2Download the GATE admit card and note the GATE registration number printed on it. The admit card is downloaded only from the zonal GATE websites of IISc and the IITs.
- 3Apply online on BPCL's careers website within BPCL's own application window, entering the GATE registration number. For the GATE-2018 cycle this window ran from 5 January 2018 to 2 February 2018.
- 4Enter exactly the same name used in the GATE online application - the advertisement is explicit that an abbreviated form of the name is not acceptable.
- 5Click Submit. On acceptance the system generates a unique application ID along with the completed application form, which is emailed to the candidate.
- 6Print the completed application, affix a recent passport size photograph - the same photograph as on the GATE application form and admit card - and sign it. This is submitted if the candidate is shortlisted for the further selection process.
- 7Appear for GATE on the scheduled dates.
- 8If called for the further selection process, identity is verified against the GATE admit card and the GATE official score card.

Is there a separate BPCL Management Trainee exam?
No. BPCL's own advertisement states that engineers wanting this post 'are required to appear for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)'. Shortlisting is on the GATE score, after which BPCL runs a Group Discussion, Personal Interview(s) and a pre-employment medical examination. Prepare for GATE.
Do I still need to apply to BPCL separately?
Yes. Registering for GATE is not an application to BPCL. After downloading your GATE admit card and getting your GATE registration number, you must apply online on BPCL's careers website within BPCL's own window.
Can I use an older GATE score?
No. BPCL considers only the GATE score of the year named in the advertisement. The GATE-2018 advertisement is explicit that GATE-2017 marks or earlier would not be considered.
Which GATE paper should I take?
The paper corresponding to your qualifying engineering discipline, as named in the advertisement. For the GATE-2018 Management Trainee cycle that was Mechanical Engineering, paper code ME. Appearing in a different GATE paper from your qualifying discipline disqualifies you from further selection.
Is a BPCL Management Trainee vacancy open now?
No. As of 4 August 2026 BPCL's Job Openings page lists only Junior Executive (Operations), shown as closed, and Junior Executive (Accounts). No Management Trainee advertisement is published.
Which engineering disciplines does BPCL recruit as Management Trainees?
It varies by advertisement. The GATE-2018 cycle recruited Mechanical Engineering only; BPCL's FAQ for the previous cycle is titled for Mechanical and Chemical Engineers. Only the advertisement for a given cycle settles this.
