Stage-I — Coast Guard Common Admission Test (CGCAT)
Required100 MCQs, +4 for a correct answer and -1 for an incorrect answer, in English, split 25 questions each across English, Reasoning & Numerical Ability, General Science & Mathematical aptitude, and General Knowledge. The Stage-I result is announced tentatively within 30 days.

Stage-II — Preliminary Selection Board (PSB)
RequiredCandidates are screened through a Computerised Cognitive Battery Test (CCBT) and a Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PP&DT). The CCBT is in English only and objective type; during PP&DT candidates speak and discuss in English, Hindi or a combination. Stage-II is only qualifying — recommended or not recommended. Photo and biometric verification against Stage-I records, followed by document verification for those who clear the PSB.

Stage-III — Final Selection Board (FSB)
RequiredCandidates are subjected to a Psychological Test, Group Task and Interview (personality test). Marks from Stage-III combine with Stage-I marks for the All India Merit List.

Stage-IV — Medical Examination
RequiredCandidates declared unfit in the Special Medical Board may appeal and report for appeal medicals at a designated service hospital within 42 days of completion of the SMB. If declared unfit on appeal, a request for a Review Medical Board may be made to DGAFMS through the Directorate of Recruitment, Coast Guard Headquarters. An RMB is not a matter of right, and its decision is final.

- 1Wait for the Assistant Commandant advertisement for the batch you want; registration of the online application is only through the Coast Guard recruitment website https://joinindiancoastguard.cdac.in.
- 2Register and fill the online application within the stated window — for the 2027 Batch this was 08 July 2025 (1600 hrs) to 27 July 2025 (2330 hrs).
- 3Give your choice of Stage-II (PSB) centre in the application form from Noida, Goa, Chennai, Kolkata, Shillong/Guwahati and Gandhinagar. ICG reserves the right to allot another centre if the situation requires, and no request for change of centre or date is entertained.
- 4Upload the documents named in the advertisement, including the original or provisional degree certificate; candidates with an Integrated Post-Graduation degree upload the institution's certificate showing the qualifying degree with marks; candidates claiming height relaxation upload a domicile certificate.
- 5Pay the examination fee of Rs. 300/- online by net banking or Visa/Master/Maestro/RuPay Credit or Debit Card or UPI. SC/ST candidates are exempt.
- 6Watch the ICG website for the announcement that e-admit cards are available — no e-mail is sent about availability. The examination city appears in your login at least 10 days before Stage-I; the e-admit card with the exact centre address appears 02-03 days before the exam.
- 7Carry to Stage-I a printout of the e-admit card, preferably in colour, and two coloured passport-size photographs identical to the one uploaded in the application form.
- 8Keep the same mobile number and e-mail ID active until the recruitment cycle is complete.

What is CGCAT and how is it marked?
CGCAT is the Coast Guard Common Admission Test, Stage-I of Assistant Commandant selection. It is a computer-based test of 100 multiple choice questions in 2 hours, in English, with four marks for each correct answer and one negative mark for each wrong answer.
What subjects come in CGCAT?
Four sections of 25 questions each — English; Reasoning & Numerical Ability; General Science & Mathematical aptitude; and General Knowledge.
What are the stages after the written test?
Stage-II is the Preliminary Selection Board — a one-day CCBT and Picture Perception & Discussion Test, purely qualifying. Stage-III is the Final Selection Board at CGSB Noida over four or five days with a psychological test, group task and interview. Stage-IV is a special medical examination at Base Hospital, New Delhi. Stage-V is induction at INA Ezhimala for the Naval Orientation Course.
How is the final merit list made?
The All India Merit List is based on the combined marks of Stage-I and Stage-III. Stage-II is only qualifying. Stage-I marks are normalised across shifts before results are declared.
Who can apply?
Male Indian citizens. For the 2027 Batch, GD candidates needed a graduate degree from a recognised university with Mathematics and Physics up to class XII, and Technical candidates needed a specified engineering degree, both aged 21-25 years as on 01 Jul 2026 — born between 01 Jul 2001 and 30 Jun 2005. Each new advertisement sets its own date-of-birth window.
What is the fee?
Rs. 300/-, paid online. SC/ST candidates are exempt, and the admit card is issued only to candidates who have paid or who qualify for the waiver.
What will I be paid as an Assistant Commandant?
Starting basic pay of ₹56,100 at Pay Level 10 under the 7th CPC, plus allowances, with promotion up the ranks to Director General at Pay Level 16. Benefits include medical cover for self and family including dependent parents, accommodation or HRA, 45 days earned leave and 08 days casual leave a year with LTC, and group insurance of ₹1.25 crore at a premium of ₹12,500 a month.
Is a Coast Guard Assistant Commandant recruitment open right now?
