FAQsPending verification
Does MIT Institute of Design, Pune still conduct its own entrance test?
Yes. MITID DAT is MIT Institute of Design's own design entrance test for B.Des and B.Des Fashion, run through its own portal at dat.net.in and held at centres across India. It is not routed through JEE Main, CUET or a state common entrance test.
What does the MITID DAT paper actually look like?
The Institute describes it as a combination of online and pen-paper questions. There is a computer-based objective MCQ section with options shuffled per candidate, a computer-based descriptive section answered in a text box, and an offline drawing section done on A4 sheets supplied at the centre, which are then collected, scanned and uploaded for evaluation. The Institute does not publish a question count, total marks or duration.
What is tested?
Design inclination based on visual clues and general awareness, analytical questions based on scientific understanding (PCM), logical thinking, verbal and nonverbal communication skills, and personality trends. The Institute says the weightage of each parameter can be changed by the paper setting committee.
What happens after the DAT?
Shortlisted candidates are called for Phase 2, a Studio Test followed by a Personal Interview at the MITID campus in Pune. Results of the shortlist are announced on the MITID website and no separate call letters are sent.
I want to do M.Des. Do I sit the same written test?
No. For M.Des, Phase 1 is the submission of a Portfolio and a Statement of Purpose, which the examination committee reviews. Shortlisted candidates then attend a Studio Test and Personal Interview on campus. M.Des candidates still register on the same dat.net.in portal.
What does it cost to apply?
Rs. 3000 for Indian applicants and Rs. 4500 for NRI, PIO, OCI and Foreign Nationals. The fee is non-refundable in any case, including where the application is rejected for not meeting eligibility.
What were the dates for the 2026-27 cycle?
Per the Institute's published Admission Schedule for Academic Year 2026-27: applications opened 17 October 2025, the DAT was held on 12 April 2026, DAT results were due 28 April 2026 after 5 pm, the B.Des studio test and interview ran 6 to 13 May 2026, and the final lists were published on 20 May 2026 after 5 pm. The M.Des application deadline was 30 June 2026. The Institute marks the schedule as tentative.
Final eligibility and dates are always subject to the latest official notification. Content marked “Pending verification” is not presented as verified advice.
