We cannot line NMMS up against other exams yet
This does not mean NMMS shares nothing with the exams you are preparing for — only that we have not loaded a chapter-by-chapter syllabus we can compare against, so we will not guess. We compare 0 exams whose official syllabus we have traced to the conducting body, and this one is not among them yet.

How to applyPending verification
- 1Watch the SCERT or school education department website of your own State/UT for the NMMS notification; there is no central application.
- 2Apply for the State/UT selection test in the manner that State prescribes. In Odisha, for example, candidates fill the application form online and submit hard copies in their school, the Headmaster or Headmistress submits countersigned hard copies to the District Education Officer, and the District Education Office verifies them.
- 3Download the admit card from the State portal in the window the State announces and sit the MAT and SAT papers.
- 4If selected, apply for the scholarship itself on the National Scholarship Portal. The guidelines state that eligible students will apply on NSP, that the application is verified by the State Governments and UT Administrations and finally sent to the Ministry for sanction of funds.
- 5Renew the application on NSP within the stipulated time period every year. The guidelines warn that scholarships will be discontinued if the student is not able to renew the application on NSP within the stipulated time period.
FAQsPending verification
Who conducts NMMS?
The scheme belongs to the Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, but the guidelines state that a separate examination shall be conducted by the State Governments and UT Administrations. Each State/UT conducts its own test at the Class VIII stage, usually through its SCERT.
When is the NMMS exam?
There is no single national date. Every State and UT announces its own. For example, the Odisha TE & SCERT portal states that the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Examination 2025-26 is to be held on 01.02.2026.
What is the paper like?
Two papers. The Mental Ability Test has 90 multiple-choice questions on reasoning and critical thinking, and the Scholastic Aptitude Test has 90 multiple-choice questions on science, social studies and mathematics as taught in Classes VII and VIII. Each test is of 90 minutes duration, with extra time for children with disability as applicable.
What marks do I need to qualify?
You must pass both tests with at least 40 per cent marks in aggregate taken together for the two tests. For SC/ST students the cut off is 32 per cent.
Can I appear if I study in a Kendriya Vidyalaya or Navodaya Vidyalaya?
No. The guidelines exclude students of Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, students of residential schools run by Centre or State Government institutions where boarding, lodging and education are provided, and students of private schools.
How much is the scholarship and for how long?
Rs. 12000 per annum at Rs. 1000 per month, paid from Class IX for a maximum of four years, subject to clear promotion each year and a minimum of 60 per cent in Class X, relaxable by 5 per cent for SC/ST candidates.
Is there an application fee?
The Odisha SCERT portal states that candidates are not required to pay any examination fees. Check your own State's notification, since the test is conducted State by State.
