Worth preparing alongside

We cannot line NTSE up against other exams yet

This does not mean NTSE shares nothing with the exams you are preparing for — only that we have not loaded a chapter-by-chapter syllabus we can compare against, so we will not guess. We compare 0 exams whose official syllabus we have traced to the conducting body, and this one is not among them yet.

Qualification pathway

Clear each applicable stage in order

Final selection or admission still depends on the published cutoff or merit list and any applicable counselling, document, medical, preference and vacancy rules.

Selection sequence

  1. 1

    State/UT level screening examination

    Required

The State/UT prepared a merit list of candidates meeting the minimum qualifying marks in both tests separately. The State-level result was used only to recommend candidates for the second-level NTS examination; the marks of the State-level examination were not added to the national-level examination for the award of scholarship.

NCERT notice (Educational Survey Division, No. F.1-13/2021/ESD/NTS-I) postponing the scheduled Stage-I and Stage-II examinations of NTSE 2021-22 due to administrative reasons, with a fresh schedule to be intimated in due course.: 2021-12-15

  2. 2

    National level examination (NTS Stage-II)

    Required

NCERT notice (F.No.1-17(4)/2024-25/ESD/NTS-II) publishing telephone numbers for enquiries regarding the National Talent Search Scheme exam and scholarship — the most recent NTS notice on NCERT's NTSE page.: 2025-06-04

Job profile & salary

Nature Of Award

NTSE led to a scholarship, not to a job. Awardees received a National Talent Search Scholarship for further study.

Number Of Scholarships

The brochure states that as on its date 2000 scholarships are awarded in the country, the number having been raised from 1000 to 2000 in 2019.

Continuation Condition

Awardees had to secure an aggregate of 60 per cent marks or equivalent grade to remain eligible for the scholarship every year; a year below that threshold forfeited the scholarship for that year.

Mode Of Payment

Payment of scholarship was made direct to the awardee, either transferred to a joint account through e-banking or sent by bank draft where e-banking was not available.

FAQs
Is NTSE being held this year?

No. NCERT's notice on the National Talent Search Scheme states that the scheme was approved till 31st March 2021, and that further implementation of the scheme in its present form has not been approved and has been stalled till further orders. NCERT has published no fresh examination schedule since NTSE 2021-22 was postponed.

Was NTSE cancelled or only postponed?

NCERT used two different words in two different notices. The notice on conducting NTSE 2021-22 says the Stage-I and Stage-II examinations were postponed due to administrative reasons and that a fresh schedule would be intimated. The later notice on the scheme says its further implementation in its present form has not been approved and has been stalled till further orders. NCERT has not published a notice using the word 'cancelled', and it has not published a fresh schedule.

Who conducted NTSE?

The National Talent Search Scheme is a central sector scheme fully funded by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, with NCERT as the implementing agency. Identification of talent was a two-stage process: the individual State/UT conducted the first-stage selection and NCERT carried out the second-stage selection at the national level.

What happens to students who already hold an NTS scholarship?

NCERT continues to run the scholarship side. Its most recent NTS notice publishes telephone numbers for enquiries regarding the National Talent Search Scheme exam and scholarship, available on working days from 02:30 p.m. to 04:30 p.m., and NCERT operates a claim-bill portal for awardees at ntse.ncert.gov.in.

Should I buy NTSE coaching or books now?

There is no scheduled examination to prepare for. Treat any claim that a cycle is imminent with suspicion unless it appears as a notice on ncert.nic.in.
