Worth preparing alongside

We cannot line SAIL Operator-cum-Technician up against other exams yet

This does not mean SAIL Operator-cum-Technician shares nothing with the exams you are preparing for — only that we have not loaded a chapter-by-chapter syllabus we can compare against, so we will not guess. We compare 0 exams whose official syllabus we have traced to the conducting body, and this one is not among them yet.

FAQs
Is a SAIL OCTT recruitment open right now?

No. As of 8 August 2026 the SAIL career page lists Management Trainee (Technical) and Young Professionals openings, not OCTT. The most recent OCTT advertisement on record is Advt. No. 01/2024, whose application window closed on 18 March 2024.

What does the SAIL OCTT exam look like?

A 90-minute Computer Based Test in Hindi or English with 100 objective questions, split into 50 on Domain Knowledge and 50 on an Aptitude Test. Qualifying is set at a 50 percentile score for unreserved and EWS posts and 40 percentile for SC/ST/OBC (NCL)/PwBD posts, calculated separately for each discipline.

Does the skill test count towards my final rank?

No. The skill test is qualifying in nature only. Final selection is on 100% weightage of the CBT marks; a tie in CBT marks is broken by higher marks in the eligibility qualification.

What qualification do I need?

Matriculation plus a 3-year full-time Diploma in the relevant branch of Engineering from a Government-recognised university or institute, with at least 50% marks for unreserved/OBC/EWS posts and 40% for SC/ST/PwBD and departmental candidates. The age band in the 2024 advertisement was 18 to 28 years as on the closing date, with the usual category relaxations.

What is the pay during and after training?

Training runs for 2 years, extendable by a further 2 years. The consolidated pay is Rs.16,100 in the first year and Rs.18,300 in the second. On successful completion, trainees are considered for regular employment in the S-3 grade, scale Rs.26600-3%-38920.
