How to applyPending verification
- 1Check the eligibility page first — age, qualification, height and chest differ between the Joint Recruitment, SI (Technical), SI (Finger Print) and the Common Recruitment.
- 2Apply online within the window given in the notification for that recruitment. The Board's process pages state that elaborate details are provided in the notification issued for the specific post.
- 3Upload the certificates you intend to rely on. Only certificates uploaded with the online application are accepted later; new certificates or claims other than the uploaded ones are not entertained.
- 4Pay the examination fee — Rs. 500 for the Joint Recruitment, through online payment only; Rs. 250 for the Common Recruitment, through SBI Bank e-challan or online payment, with no other mode accepted.
- 5Sit the Tamil Language Eligibility Test and the Main Written Examination. Your main paper's OMR sheet is evaluated only if you score at least 40% in the Tamil Language Eligibility Test.
- 6If called, attend certificate verification with the original certificates and two photocopies of each uploaded certificate, and take the Physical Measurement Test, the Endurance Test and the Physical Efficiency Test at the same centre.
- 7For the Joint Recruitment, attend the viva-voce if called — candidates are called at twice the notified vacancies, plus anyone tied at the cut-off. Bring the originals and two sets of photocopies of NCC, NSS and Sports certificates for special marks, which are awarded at this stage.
- 8For the Common Recruitment, a provisionally selected candidate undergoes a medical examination and verification of character and antecedents through the Police Department.
FAQsPending verification
Who conducts TN Police SI and Constable recruitment?
The Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB), Pantheon Road, Egmore, Chennai 600 008, chaired by the Director General of Police. It has recruited for the Police, Fire and Rescue, and Prison Departments of Tamil Nadu since 1991. Sub-Inspectors come through the Joint Recruitment for SI of Police and Station Officer; Constables come through the Common Recruitment for Gr.II Constables, Gr.II Jail Warders and Firemen.
What qualification and age do I need?
Joint Recruitment (SI of Police and Station Officer): a Bachelor's Degree from a UGC or Government recognised University, and age 20 to 30 as on 1st July of the notification year. Common Recruitment (Constable, Jail Warder, Fireman): 10th Standard pass, and age 18 to 26 as on 1st July of the notification year. SI (Technical) needs at least a second class Diploma in Electronics and Communication engineering from the State Board of Technical Education, Tamil Nadu, or an AICTE-recognised B.E./B.Tech in the same; SI (Finger Print) needs a Science degree in the 10+2+3 pattern.
What are the age relaxations?
Joint Recruitment and both SI streams: 32 years for BC, BC(Muslim), MBC/DNC; 35 for SC, SC(A), ST and for transgender candidates; 37 for a destitute widow; 47 for ex-servicemen discharged within 3 years of the notification, for serving persons retiring within one year of the last date, and for Police and Fire & Rescue Services departmental quota candidates. Common Recruitment: 28 for BC, BC(Muslim), MBC/DNC; 31 for SC, SC(A), ST and transgender candidates; 37 for a destitute widow; 47 for ex-servicemen and serving persons retiring within one year.
What is the minimum height?
Joint Recruitment and Common Recruitment: 170 cms for men and 159 cms for women, relaxed to 167 cms and 157 cms for SC, SC(A) and ST candidates, with a men's chest of minimum 81 cms and a minimum 5 cms expansion. SI (Technical): 163 cms for men and 154 cms for women, relaxed to 160 cms and 152 cms for SC, SC(A) and ST, with a men's chest of minimum 80 cms and a minimum 5 cms expansion. SI (Finger Print): the same heights as SI (Technical), with no chest measurement.
Can I skip the Tamil paper?
No. Both recruitments begin with a Tamil Language Eligibility Test — 100 questions in 100 minutes for the Joint Recruitment and 80 questions in 80 minutes for the Common Recruitment. It is qualifying: you must score at least 40% for your Main Written Examination OMR sheet to be evaluated at all. Its marks are never counted towards the selection list.
What is the main written paper like?
Joint Recruitment: 70 marks over 2½ hours — Part A General Knowledge, 40 marks in 80 questions, and Part B a Psychology Test of Logical Analysis, Numerical skills, Mental Ability, Communication Skills and Information Handling Ability, 30 marks in 60 questions. Each question carries ½ mark and you need at least 25 marks to qualify. Questions are bilingual in Tamil and English except the communication skill questions. Common Recruitment: 70 marks in 1 hour 20 minutes — Part-A General Knowledge 45 marks and Part-B Psychology 25 marks, with the same 25-mark qualifying bar.
How are the 100 marks split?
Joint Recruitment: Main Written Examination 70, Physical Efficiency Test 15, Viva-Voce 10 and Special Marks 5. Common Recruitment: Written Examination 70, Physical Efficiency Test 24 and Special Marks 6. Note that the Common Recruitment has no viva-voce, and its physical events are worth far more — 4 marks for one star and 8 for two stars across three events.
What do I have to do in the physical tests?
First the Physical Measurement Test for height and, for men, chest. Then the Endurance Test — 1500 metres in 7 minutes for men, 400 metres in 2 minutes 30 seconds for women and transgender candidates, and 1500 metres in 8 minutes for ex-servicemen and personnel retiring within a year in the Common Recruitment. Both are qualifying. Then the Physical Efficiency Test, which carries marks: for men rope climbing, long jump or high jump, and a 100 or 400 metres run; for women and transgender candidates long jump, shotput or cricket ball throw, and a 100 or 200 metres run.
Am I exempt from the Physical Measurement Test?
In the Joint Recruitment, ex-servicemen, serving persons retiring within one year, ex-CAPF personnel and department quota candidates are exempted from the Physical Measurement Test. In the Common Recruitment, ex-servicemen discharged within 3 years of the notification and serving persons retiring within one year of the last date are exempted. Everyone still takes the Endurance Test.
Is my height rounded off?
Yes, in the Joint Recruitment. All height and chest measurements are rounded to the nearest 0.5 cm to allow for margin of error — for example 169.6 and 169.7 round to 169.5, while 169.8 and 169.9 round to 170.0. If you are not satisfied with your measurement you can appeal to the Sub-Committee Chairperson for re-measurement. A height or chest certificate from a government hospital or any other agency is not accepted.
What extra marks can I earn?
Special marks for NCC, NSS and Sports — up to 5 marks in the Joint Recruitment (NCC 2, NSS 1, Sports 2) and up to 6 marks in the Common Recruitment (NCC 2, NSS 2, Sports 2). An NCC 'A' certificate is worth ½ mark, 'B' 1 mark and 'C' or Under Officer Best Cadet at All India level 2 marks. Sports marks run from ½ mark for representing your school at district level up to 2 marks for representing India in international competition on a Form-I certificate. In each category only your highest certificate counts.
What does it cost to apply?
Rs. 500 for the Joint Recruitment, payable through online payment only. Rs. 250 for the Common Recruitment, payable either through SBI Bank e-challan or online payment — no other mode of payment is accepted.
When is the next notification?
The Board publishes an Annual Planner. For 2026-2027 the tentative notification dates are Sub-Inspector (Technical) in February 2027, Band Police Constable in March 2027, Common Recruitment in June 2027 and Joint Recruitment in August 2027. These are the Board's tentative months, not confirmed dates. At the time of research the Board's banner also recorded that the SI-2025 written examination revised result was still to be released.
Are past papers available?
Yes, on the Board's own Previous Question Papers archive — the 2023 Joint Recruitment Tamil Eligibility Test and main papers for open, Police departmental and Fire departmental candidates; the 2022 Sub-Inspector papers with answer keys; the 2019 Sub-Inspector paper; and the 2022, 2020 and 2019 Common Recruitment papers, the 2022 one with its answer key.
