Worth preparing alongside

We cannot line TNEA up against other exams yet

This does not mean TNEA shares nothing with the exams you are preparing for — only that we have not loaded a chapter-by-chapter syllabus we can compare against, so we will not guess. We compare 0 exams whose official syllabus we have traced to the conducting body, and this one is not among them yet.

Clear each applicable stage in order

Final selection or admission still depends on the published cutoff or merit list and any applicable counselling, document, medical, preference and vacancy rules.

Selection sequence

  1. 1

    Online application registration

    Required

Not an examination stage. The candidate registers a username and password, fills the application and submits it before the last date; a PDF is issued on successful registration.

    Registration Closes: 2026-06-05

  2. 2

Uploading of certificates and online certificate verification at TFCs

    Required

Not an examination stage. Registered candidates upload copies of the listed original certificates; verification is conducted online through the TFCs.

  3. 3

Random number assignment and publication of rank list

    Required

Not an examination stage. Overall rank and community-wise rank lists are published online only; no separate newspaper announcement is given. Grievances can be raised at the nearest TFC within 5 days of publication.

  4. 4

    Online counselling - multiple rounds

    Required

Not an examination stage. Candidates are grouped by rank and participate in their turn. Each round gives three days for choice filling; a candidate may fill any number of choices and the order matters. An allotted seat must be confirmed within 2 days or the candidate moves to the next round. Confirmation options include 'Accept and Join' and 'Accept and Upward'.

    General Counselling Ends: 2026-08-30

FAQs
Is there a TNEA entrance exam?

No. There is no TNEA entrance examination at all. The official brochure states that selection is based on the marks obtained in the prescribed subjects reduced to 200 - Mathematics 100, Physics 50, Chemistry 50 - in the qualifying examination. Your class 12 marks are your TNEA score.

Then what decides my rank?

Your class 12 Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry marks, scaled to a 200-mark total, after normalisation if you are from a board other than the Tamil Nadu State Board. Ties are broken by percentage in Mathematics, then Physics, then the optional subject, then total 12th standard percentage, then date of birth (elder preferred), then an assigned random number (higher preferred).

What is the minimum mark I need to be eligible?

A pass in HSC (both +1 and +2) with an average of at least 45.00% in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together in +2 for the General Category, and at least 40.00% for Backward Class including Backward Class Muslim, MBC & DNC, and SC/SCA/ST. Rounding and normalised marks are not used for this minimum.

I am from CBSE. Will my marks be treated differently?

They are normalised against Tamil Nadu State Board marks before the common merit list is made. For CBSE and ISCE candidates, the highest mark obtained in that subject at the national level is what is used as the reference for normalisation.

I am not from Tamil Nadu. Can I apply?

It depends on the nativity rules. Candidates who studied VIII to XII standard in Tamil Nadu can apply. So can children of Central Government or public sector employees who have served in Tamil Nadu continuously for the past five years, and sons and daughters of All India Service Tamil Nadu cadre officers. These categories are considered under Open Competition. Read Section 3 of the brochure before assuming you qualify.

How much does it cost to apply?

Rs 500 for OC, BC, BCM and MBC & DNC candidates; Rs 250 for SC, SCA and ST candidates.

Does TNEA cover Anna University seats?

Yes. Seats in the University Departments and Constituent Colleges of Anna University are part of the TNEA single-window system, as are seats in Government and Government Aided engineering colleges, Annamalai University, CECRI Karaikudi, CIPET Chennai, IIHT Salem, and seats surrendered by self-financing colleges. One application covers all of them.

Should I buy TNEA mock tests or previous year papers?

There is nothing to mock-test. TNEA sets no paper, so no genuine TNEA question paper exists. Time is better spent on your class 12 board preparation in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and on getting your certificates and choice-filling right.
