Worth preparing alongside

We cannot line WBCS up against other exams yet

This does not mean WBCS shares nothing with the exams you are preparing for — only that we have not loaded a chapter-by-chapter syllabus we can compare against, so we will not guess. We compare 0 exams whose official syllabus we have traced to the conducting body, and this one is not among them yet.

FAQs
Who conducts WBCS?

The Public Service Commission, West Bengal (WBPSC), at 161 A, S. P. Mukherjee Road, Kolkata-700026. Its website is https://psc.wb.gov.in.

Is WBCS one exam or several?

One combined competitive examination for four groups of services and posts — Groups A, B, C and D — with a graduated syllabus. A candidate may compete for one or more groups but submits only one application indicating the choice of group(s).

Do I need to know Bengali?

Yes. The qualification is a degree of a recognized University plus the ability to read, write and speak in Bengali. Candidates whose mother tongue is Nepali are exempt from this requirement, but must pass a departmental examination in Bengali within two years of appointment. Candidates whose mother tongue is other than Bengali or Nepali are tested in Bengali at the Personality Test.

Do Preliminary marks count towards final selection?

No. The Preliminary Examination is a screening test only. The Final Merit List is prepared on the basis of marks obtained in the Main Examination and the Personality Test taken together.

Is there negative marking?

Yes, for each wrong answer to multiple-choice questions. The Commission states that this is printed at the top of the question booklet. The Commission does not publish the size of the deduction in the advertisement or the Scheme and Syllabus, so no fraction is quoted here.

When is the next WBCS?

The 2024 cycle (Advt. No. 08/2024) is in progress — its Preliminary Examination was held on 14 June 2026 and the answer key is published; no Main Examination date has been announced. For the 2025 cycle the Commission has issued only Indicative Advertisement No. 03/2025 dated 29 November 2025, which says detailed information will follow on psc.wb.gov.in in due course. No application or examination date is published for the 2025 cycle.

Final eligibility and dates are always subject to the latest official notification. Content marked “Pending verification” is not presented as verified advice.
