BEL Probationary Engineer

No. Advertisement No. 17556/HR/All-India/2025 does not mention GATE at all. BEL's Section 10 reads: 'Selection will be based on the performance of the candidate in both the computer based test and interview. The weightage for Compute based test is 85 marks and interview is 15 marks.' BEL conducts its own Computer Based Test. This is a common misconception worth checking against the advertisement for whichever cycle you are applying to.

120 minutes, 125 objective questions - 100 technical and 25 general aptitude and reasoning. Each question carries 1 mark, and 1/4th mark is deducted for each wrong answer. Unattempted or marked-for-review questions earn nothing and lose nothing. The paper is bilingual, English and Hindi only, and where the Hindi differs the English version is valid.

BEL publishes only a scope statement, not a topic list. The technical section draws on the core engineering subjects of your own discipline or specialization, and BEL advises preparing thoroughly based on the curriculum of your engineering qualification. The remaining section is General Aptitude, testing analytical and reasoning abilities.

A minimum of 35% for General / OBC (NCL) / EWS / ESM candidates and 30% for SC / ST / PwBD candidates - and that minimum applies separately to the computer based test and to the interview. Clearing the CBT alone is not enough; you must also clear the interview threshold.

Based on the computer based test score, candidates are shortlisted for interview in the order of merit in the ratio 1:5. The shortlist is published on the BEL website through query mode.

Under Advertisement No. 17556/HR/All-India/2025: Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Electronics & Telecommunication, Communication, Telecommunication, and Mechanical. BEL states expressly that other equivalent disciplines and dual specializations will NOT be considered. UR / OBC (NCL) / EWS candidates need First Class from AICTE approved colleges; SC / ST / PwBD candidates with Pass Class are eligible. First Class in AMIE / AMIETE / GIETE in those disciplines also qualifies.

25 years for unreserved candidates as on the crucial date, which was 01.01.2025 in the 2025 advertisement. Relaxable by 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC (NCL) and 10 years for PwBD, with the PwBD relaxation additional to any SC/ST/OBC (NCL) relaxation. Only the Matriculation or Higher Secondary certificate mentioning the date of birth is accepted as proof of age.

Basic pay scale of Rs. 40,000 - 3% - 1,40,000 in E-II Grade with a stated CTC of 13 lacs, plus DA, HRA, Conveyance Allowance, Performance Related Pay, Medical Reimbursement and other perquisites. There is a 6-month orientation / on-the-job training and a Service Agreement to serve BEL for 2 years; the amount payable for breach of the service contract is Rs. 2,00,000.

Not as of 04 August 2026. BEL's Job Notifications page currently lists Project Engineer, Probationary Legal Officer, Sr. Assistant Engineer / Officer, Havildar (Security), Advisor and apprenticeship openings - no Probationary Engineer. Note the abbreviation trap: 'PE' on BEL's site usually means PROJECT Engineer, a fixed-tenure contractual engagement, not the permanent Probationary Engineer in E-II Grade.
