FAQsPending verification
Is there a DRDO Scientist B entrance exam I should prepare for?
No. RAC's own home page states: 'For the Direct Recruitment to the post of Scientist B in DRDO, candidates are required to possess a valid GATE score in the relevant discipline for which GATE is conducted, including the disciplines of Engineering Sciences, Life Sciences, and Humanities & Social Sciences.' Advertisement No. 156 puts it as: 'The recruitment in the disciplines will be based on valid GATE Score (2023/2024/2025) and Personal Interview.' Prepare for GATE in your discipline's paper. There is no separate DRDO paper to study for.
Which GATE paper do I need?
The one prescribed against the discipline you are applying for. Under Advertisement No. 156 the mapping ran, among others: Electronics & Communication Engg to EC, Mechanical to ME, Computer Science to CS, Electrical to EE, Metallurgy / Material Science to MT or Engineering Sciences XE, Physics to PH, Chemistry to CY, Chemical Engg to CH, Aeronautical / Aerospace to AE, Mathematics to MA, Civil to CE, Bio-medical to BM, Entomology to Life Sciences XL, Statistics to ST, and Clinical Psychology and Psychology to Humanities & Social Sciences XH. Always read the current advertisement's table - the mapping is set afresh each time.
How old can my GATE score be?
It depends on the advertisement. Advertisement No. 156 accepted GATE scores of 2023, 2024 or 2025. RAC's Public Notice adds that only candidates who possess a valid GATE score on the crucial date of eligibility will be considered for shortlisting. Do not assume a three-year window will always apply.
How does the selection actually work?
Eligible candidates are shortlisted on GATE score in the ratio 1:10 in discipline-wise, category-wise merit order. Those shortlisted appear for a Personal Interview at Delhi or another place decided by RAC. The final merit is 80% weightage of the GATE score plus 20% weightage of the interview marks. You must also score at least 70% (UR) or 60% (EWS/OBC/SC/ST/Divyangjan) in the interview itself - a candidate who fails to clear that bar is not selected no matter how high the GATE score.
Could there be a written test as well?
Possibly, in a future cycle. RAC's Public Notice of 27-Aug-2025 says direct recruitment will be conducted 'based on a valid GATE score and/or written test / interview', and Advertisement No. 156 reserves the right to administer 'any other selection tool/test' at RAC's sole discretion. Advertisement No. 156 itself set no written test. Read the advertisement for the cycle you are applying to.
What is the age limit?
Under Advertisement No. 156, age not exceeding 35 years for UR/EWS, 38 for OBC (non-creamy layer) and 40 for SC/ST, reckoned as on the closing date of the advertisement. Divyangjan candidates get up to 10 years' relaxation; serving Central Civilian Government employees up to 5 years in the same or allied cadres; ex-servicemen as per rules in vogue. Note that when RAC extended the application deadline to 08 August 2025, it kept 04 July 2025 as the date for determining age.
What is the pay?
Level-10 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix, with a Basic Pay of Rs.56,100/-. The advertisement states that total emoluments inclusive of HRA and all other allowances at joining will be approximately Rs. 1,00,000/- per month at the present metro city rate.
Is there a Scientist B advertisement open right now?
As of 04 August 2026, no. The most recent Scientist 'B' direct recruitment is Advertisement No. 156, whose final cut-off marks were released to shortlisted candidates on 28 April 2026. RAC's Public Notice says the detailed advertisement for a further cycle will be notified in the Employment News and on rac.gov.in if and when the requirement arises, and RAC asks applicants to check its website at least twice a week. In the meantime, hold a valid GATE score so you are ready to apply.
If I am selected, am I joining DRDO?
Not necessarily. The same advertisement fills posts in DRDO, in ADA Bengaluru (where you would be designated Scientist/Engineer 'B' and would not be part of DRDO), and encadred Scientist 'B' posts in WESEE, CME, AFMC and the Services Selection Centres. The encadred posts belong to the Indian Armed Services, are paid by them, and are not transferable to DRDO establishments.
Final eligibility and dates are always subject to the latest official notification. Content marked “Pending verification” is not presented as verified advice.
