FAQsPending verification
Is there a separate ITBP Assistant Commandant exam?
No. Assistant Commandants for Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) are recruited through the UPSC Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandants) Examination, the same written examination used for BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP and SSB. Apply on upsconline.nic.in, not on the force's own portal.
What does the written examination look like?
Two papers on one day. Paper-I, General Ability and Intelligence, is objective type for 250 marks from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, set in English and Hindi. Paper-II, General Studies, Essay and Comprehension, is for 200 marks from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Paper-II is evaluated only if you clear the minimum qualifying marks in Paper-I.
Is there negative marking?
Yes, in the objective paper. One third (0.33) of the marks for a question is deducted for a wrong answer. Marking more than one option counts as wrong even if one of them is correct. Blank answers carry no penalty.
What is the age limit?
For the 2026 cycle a candidate had to have attained 20 years and not attained 25 years as on 1st August 2026. SC/ST candidates get up to five years' relaxation, OBC candidates up to three years, and Civilian Central Government Servants and Ex-Servicemen up to five years. The reference date moves each cycle — read it off the current notice.
What happens after the written examination?
Physical Standards and Physical Efficiency Tests run by the forces under a Ministry of Home Affairs Nodal Authority, then a UPSC Interview/Personality Test of 150 marks, then Medical Standards Tests. The final merit list uses only the written marks and the Interview/Personality Test marks.
Final eligibility and dates are always subject to the latest official notification. Content marked “Pending verification” is not presented as verified advice.
