- 1Identify the recruiting office — the State NHM unit, and in states such as Haryana the District Health & Family Welfare Society through the Civil Surgeon of the district — using the NHM 'States/UTs Official' page and then the state's own NHM website.
- 2Watch that site's Recruitment / Vacancies / Career section. There is no national portal and no national application form for NHM Staff Nurse or ANM posts.
- 3Download the advertisement and read it before applying. Confirm the qualification, the nursing council registration the state demands, the age band and the selection method.
- 4Apply in exactly the mode the advertisement sets. Haryana's Panipat advertisement required a completed application form on the prescribed format delivered by hand to the Office of Civil Surgeon on working days up to the closing time, and stated that the department is not responsible for postal delay. Meghalaya's advertisement required the application to be submitted through a specified Google form, once only, with the CV and supporting documents combined into a single PDF under 15 MB, from a Gmail account.
- 5Attach everything the advertisement lists. Haryana required clear legible particulars with contact number, e-mail ID, postal address with pin code, passport-size photo, and self-attested copies of educational qualification, experience and residence proof, with the advertisement number and post name written on the form; it also warned that unfilled, unsigned or incomplete forms are rejected and that no document is accepted after submission.
- 6Where local-area weightage is offered, submit the proofs it requires — Haryana gives no residential weightage unless at least three of the six listed residence documents are attached.
- 7Attend document verification, skill test, interview or counselling on the dates the office announces, and keep checking the website; several advertisements state that no personal intimation is sent and that no TA/DA is paid for attending.

Is there one national NHM Staff Nurse or ANM exam?
No. The National Health Mission runs through a State Health Society in every State and Union Territory, and Staff Nurse and ANM posts are advertised by those state units — in some states, such as Haryana, by the District Health & Family Welfare Society of an individual district through the office of the Civil Surgeon. There is no national notification, no national application form and no national exam date.
Will I have to sit a written test?
It depends entirely on where you apply. In Haryana the Mission Director withdrew the earlier district-level selection criteria in March 2023 after complaints about discrepancies in the written examination, and replaced them with a 50-mark documentary matrix — 30 marks for the essential basic qualification, up to 10 for relevant post experience and 10 for local-area residence — so district-level recruitment there has no written paper. Meghalaya's Staff Nurse advertisement runs a screening process and a personal interview. Punjab has in the past held a written examination for ANM (Female) followed by a skill test and counselling.
What qualification do I need?
That is also state-set. Haryana's Panipat advertisement asked for B.Sc. Nursing or GNM from a Government-recognised institution for Staff Nurse, and an ANM course from a Government-recognised institution for ANM, in both cases with registration with the Haryana Nurses Registration Council and Hindi or Sanskrit up to Matric. Meghalaya asked for GNM plus two years of experience in Government health institutions, computer knowledge, Meghalaya domicile and Meghalaya Nursing Council registration.
What is the age limit?
Haryana's district-level rule is that no person less than 18 years or more than 42 years of age may be appointed by direct recruitment, except for relaxation directed by the Mission Director, NHM Haryana. Meghalaya's Staff Nurse advertisement required candidates to be under 45 years of age. Check your own advertisement.
What does the job pay?
The advertisement decides. In the Panipat advertisement under NHM Haryana, Staff Nurse carried Rs. 13,500 per month and ANM Rs. 9,840 per month, both purely on contract. The Meghalaya Staff Nurse advertisement printed no figure and said only 'As per NHM norms'.
How secure is the post?
These are contractual engagements, not permanent government posts. The Haryana advertisement made the contract valid initially up to a stated date, renewable subject to State approval and annual appraisal, and stated that the number of posts may be increased or decreased and the posts discontinued at any time depending on work load, requirement or validity of the project. The Meghalaya advertisement was for six months only, purely on an officiating basis.
