What does the Preliminary Examination contain?
60 minutes, three separately timed objective sections totalling 100 questions and 100 marks: English Language 30 questions in 20 minutes (English only), Reasoning Ability 35 questions in 20 minutes, and Quantitative Aptitude 35 questions in 20 minutes. You must clear each section, and roughly 15 times the vacancies go through to the Main Examination.
How does the Main Examination differ for Generalists and Specialists?
Both are 250 questions for 250 marks over 3 hours. Generalists take five sections of 50 questions each — Reasoning, English Language, General Awareness, Computer Knowledge and Quantitative Aptitude. Specialists take those same five at 40 questions each plus a sixth 50-question paper on technical and professional knowledge in their discipline.
Does the descriptive test count?
No. It is 30 minutes for 30 marks — Essay 10, Précis 10, Comprehension 10 — and is qualifying in nature. The advertisement states its marks are not counted towards shortlisting for interview or final selection, and it is evaluated only if you clear the objective test.
Is there negative marking?
Yes, in both Preliminary and Main objective tests. One-fourth of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for a wrong answer; blank answers carry no penalty.
What was the age limit in the 2024-25 cycle?
21 to 30 years as on 01.05.2025 — born not earlier than 02.05.1995 and not later than 01.05.2004. Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates get 5 years' relaxation; read clause 6 of the advertisement for the other categories.
