Shortlisting for Personal Interview on GATE merit

PwBD candidates are shortlisted separately by applying the 1:12 ratio in each category of disability for which vacancies are reserved. Discipline and category wise cut-offs are displayed on NPCIL's recruitment web portal.

Personal Interview
RequiredFinal selection is done on the basis of performance in the Personal Interview subject to medical fitness. No weightage is given to the GATE score during the final selection. Qualifying marks for the interview are 70% for Unreserved and 60% for EWS/SC/ST/OBC (NCL)/PwBD.

Is there an NPCIL written exam for Scientific Officer?
Not for the six engineering disciplines. NPCIL shortlists on GATE scores and selects on a Personal Interview. NPCIL does set its own Computer Based Test for the two other Executive Trainee disciplines, Industrial & Fire Safety and Physics.
Which GATE years does NPCIL accept?
For ET-2026, valid GATE 2024, GATE 2025 or GATE 2026 scores, with equal weightage given to all three. A GATE score of 2023 or earlier is not entertained.
Does a high GATE score help in final selection?
Only to get you the interview. NPCIL states plainly: 'No weightage will be given to GATE Score during the final selection.' Final selection is on Personal Interview performance subject to medical fitness.
How many candidates are called for interview?
Shortlisting is done in the order of merit on GATE scores at a ratio of 1:12. If more than one candidate shares the cut-off mark, all of them are shortlisted.
What marks must I get in the interview?
70% for Unreserved candidates and 60% for EWS/SC/ST/OBC (NCL)/PwBD candidates.
What do I earn as a trainee and after appointment?
A monthly stipend of Rs 74,000 plus a one-time book allowance of Rs 30,000 during training, with lodging and boarding provided by NPCIL. On appointment as Scientific Officer/C you are at Level 10 in the Pay Matrix with pay of Rs. 56,100.
What is the age limit?
26 years for General/EWS as on 30/04/2026, 29 for OBC (NCL), 31 for SC/ST, 36 for PwBD General/EWS and 39 for PwBD OBC (NCL). There is no age limit for serving NPCIL employees who otherwise meet the criteria.
