Is there one national ANM/GNM entrance exam in India?
No. Admission to ANM and GNM diplomas is arranged state by state. Each state's board or authority issues its own notification, sets its own eligibility, runs its own paper on its own date and counsels its own candidates. The Indian Nursing Council sets training standards nationally but does not conduct an entrance examination.
Then how do I find the right exam for me?
Find the authority that admits to ANM/GNM in the state where you want to study. In West Bengal it is the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board; in Jammu & Kashmir the J&K Board of Professional Entrance Examinations; in Bihar the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board. If your state is not listed here, start from the Indian Nursing Council's list of State Nursing Councils.
Can men apply for ANM?
It depends on the state. In West Bengal the Board's admission criteria table records ANM(R) as 'Only Female' and GNM as 'Female and Male'. Read your own state's document; do not assume West Bengal's rule applies elsewhere.
Is there an upper age limit?
It varies. West Bengal's admission criteria table records 'No Upper Age Limit' for both ANM(R) and GNM. The J&K Board requires candidates to be at least 17 and not more than 35 years of age as on 31-12-2026 for both courses.
Is there negative marking?
In the West Bengal paper, yes for Category-1 questions: a correct response yields 1 mark and an incorrect response yields minus one-quarter mark; not attempting fetches 0. Marking schemes are set state by state, so check your own state's bulletin.
What if my state does not hold a written test?
Some authorities reserve the right to admit on qualifying-examination marks. The J&K Board's notification says that if it does not conduct the entrance test, selection of eligible candidates shall be made on the basis of the percentage of marks obtained in the qualifying examination.
