- 5Advocates practising outside Uttar Pradesh: obtain forwarding from the District and Sessions Judge of the concerned District, or the Registrar General/Registrar of the High Court, or the Secretary General of the Supreme Court, and send the duly filled and forwarded form directly to the Registrar (Judicial) (Selection & Appointment/Seniority), High Court of Judicature at Allahabad.

Who conducts the U.P. Higher Judicial Service examination?
The High Court of Judicature at Allahabad. It publishes the advertisement, runs the online application portal and issues every notice through the Registrar (J) (Selection & Appointment/Seniority). This is different from the U.P. Judicial Service Civil Judge (Junior Division) examination, which the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission conducts.
Who is eligible to apply?
Advocates not already in the service of the Union or a State, with not less than seven years of continuous practice, who have independently conducted at least 30 cases (Unreserved and EWS) or 24 cases (SC, ST, OBC) other than bunch cases in the preceding three years. The age band for UPHJS-2023 was 35 to 45 years as on 01.01.2024, relaxed to 48 years for SC/ST/OBC/PwD candidates of Uttar Pradesh.
What is the examination pattern?
A Preliminary Examination of 100 one-mark MCQs in 2 hours with no negative marking and a 45% qualifying bar; a Main Written Examination of four papers - General Awareness & Legal Language (100 marks) and Law-I, Law-II and Law-III (200 marks each), each of three hours; and an Interview of 100 marks. Final merit is the aggregate of the Main Written Examination and the Interview.
